Nigel Moyes
Nigel is a commercial and landscape photographer who owns and runs his boutique branding and design agency thejamjar and his digital agency Inkjam Digital in Mt Hawthorn, Perth, Western Australia.
His passion for landscapes developed years ago when he travelled the world in the Royal Australian Navy. These years at sea developed his keen eye and love for what nature serves up in colour, texture, mood and light and how it reflects from the sky onto the water. This became his schooling and education to understand and appreciate slow exposures and capturing colour and light.
Nigel was previously an Accredited AIPP Member before it closed its doors and is now a Pro Photography WA Member and an Accredited NZIPP Member.
Client Photography
Being the owner of two ad agencies based in Mt Hawthorn called The Jam Jar Ad Agency and Inkjam Digital, it is through my love of design and creating modern and very contemporary brands that I try and let this graphic orientation guide me on my photographic journey.
When I shoot portraits for all my clients, I mostly like to use a white background because it makes it very easy to place the portraits into the clients collateral like brochures and websites and I like to shoot the client in a full body pose because I feel you get the best of a person and find their true personality when they stand comfortably and dont feel like they are getting their shitty drivers license or passport photo.
Shooting Landscapes
For me, standing in the pre dawn light or the 20mins after sunset and being the only person out there is the drug we call landscape photography and the rush of impending excitement we get when we race back to download the images and start the post production process is something only photographers get to experience.
I have been creating works of art for 20 years now and I have a certain style that I think transcends across many generations in how I personally view the landscape with its colour, texture and composition but I truly believe as an artist I only “found” my style about 14 years ago which then has made everything so much more fun and easy when I go out on shoots.
My work is not composite photography. I dont swap out skies and fake my images to the point that they are barely recognisable from the original RAW image shot. Other than a pano, I take one shot and do my basic edits in photoshop and lightroom to bring alive what the camera had already captured. If mother earth doesn’t turn it on during the shoot then I move on to another day.
What do I shoot with?
I am a Canon man all the way and always have been but if Leica sponsored me with a Leica SL2 Camera and all the lenses I would jump!
I shoot with a Canon 5Dsr with my B+W Polaroid Filter and my Sirui Tripod and switch between my 16-35mm f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8 lenses when I shoot landscapes and I use my 50mm f1.8 and 80mm f1.8 for all my portraits and sometimes jumping back on the 70-200mm f2.8.
